Renegade Craft Fair Brooklyn, at McCarren Park in Williamsburg
Sat + Sun, June 6 + 7 from 11-7 www.renegadecraft.com
Please stop by if you're in the area and say hello! We'll be in booth #147. Hope to see you there! Also, I will try to be back soon with non-craft fair news.
Well, I'm about to be elbow-deep in dye vats, but wanted to mention (oh-so-casually) that we'll be in Philadelphia this weekend (May 30th + 31st) for the Art Star Craft Bazaar.
It's my first year doing Art Star, and I'm really excited! Not also because we REALLY just like the city itself a lot too... it's been almost 4 years since we were last there, but I'm excited to find some time for a tiny bit of wandering (and cheesesteaks!) and MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, dinner at morimoto... a girl can dream, right?
Any suggestions for places we should try to swing by? We're staying downtown (? shows you how well I actually know Philly) -- well, right near City Hall and pretty close to the Liberty Bell and Penn's Landing...
so, I have a blog post in the works about making dumplings (yum!) in the works, but I'm about to do my first craft fair for the spring/summer season and thought I'd pop in to tell you about it.
We were there last year, and except for more goose poop than I like to see (really I prefer not to see any at all but there was kind of a lot on some parts of the lawn), it was a really fun event. Lots of crafts, games, sheep(!), sheep dog demos, and of course, FOOD. I've been thinking about having a frozen apple cider since last spring.
Anyway, it's from 10-4 at Gore Place, in Waltham, Massachusetts. More info here: http://www.goreplace.org/sheepshearing.htm Please stop by and say hello if you're in the area! We'll have sunblock and shade-- it's supposed to be in the 80s!
...for instant gratification crafts. Especially when you're hiding out working on your taxes. I just rediscovered cubeecraft.com, which is perfect for when you need a little break from un-fun things. I took a break and put together a little Prince of my own the other day.
Isn't he cute? (And yes, that is Law & Order on Netflix Instant in the background on my computer. Don't judge me.) What I love most about Cubeecraft is that there is no glue required. Just a nice sharp pair of scissors and an X-acto knife, if you've got one. And oh, the variety! So many fun friends to choose from! I'm thinking that maybe Mulder & Scully should be next, or perhaps Lion-O? (Thundercats, ho!) Mayor McCheese & Grimace are pretty tempting too. Too many to choose from! There are lots of simpler cubes with less pieces, too. Don't be surprised if I reappear here with a horde of little paper buddies!
PS. How much do I love the Katamari games? If you haven't played before, find a friend who still has a PS2 and try it. Or just watch someone else play it. Seriously.
Well, so much for blogging promises. Made and broken. I think my break from (my already only semi-regular) blogging and reading blogs in general has been a good one, but I think it's about time to ease back into the whole thing.
March definitely did NOT go out like a lamb... at least not like any lamb I would be fond of... gusting winds, low temperatures, COLD rain. Boo. To help me out of my why-doesn't-it-feel-like-spring-yet? funk last week, we went shopping for fresh fruits & vegetables and came home with these lovelies:
I LOVE radishes! But don't always have a plan for them... this time we were ready, though!
+ =
(YUM.)
Sorry for the darkening photos, it was getting late while we were finishing up.
We used this recipe from this book. Which, by the way, I like a lot. I used to have a subscription to FOOD Magazine, but I could never remember which issue a recipe was in, which was annoying. This is much easier, and contains a lot of the more sensible, quick-prep recipes. Perfect for quick dinners.
We subbed rib-eye for the skirt steak. The only other tweaks we made were to add a little more lime and cilantro, and to cut the olive oil (down to just a few spritzes) a bit. Seriously, delicious. And honestly, quicker than most of the dinners we have, including the sad ones where we are baking or microwaving something frozen.
Well, the fall has been more of a whirlwind than expected. Some personal stuff going on here-- nothing that constitutes a full-on emergency per se, but just stressful enough to keep me as focused as I'd like to be at this time of year. Lots of things (blogging, flickr, updates) seem to have gone out the window as I deal with family things and keeping up with the essentials. On that note... time to pimp Felt Club!
Southern California, come on out! The show looks AMAZING. There are so many cool artists + crafters vending, and loads of workshops, swag bags, food, drinks and more! I'm super-excited to be able to go out + participate. More info at the website, of course, but the basics: FELT CLUB: HOLIDAY 2008 Sunday, NOVEMBER 16, 11am-7pm @ Shrine Auditorium Expo Center 700 W. 32nd St., LA CA 90007
Will be back asap (I swear!) to draw some names and send out goodies (thanks to everyone who wrote or commented) after the weekend. Hopefully I'll remember to take a few photos while I'm out there, too.
Well, it's my birthday this month. In two days, actually. And one thing I really liked in Taiwan is that your birthday is about giving to others, not about others giving to you. People treat their friends to dinner on their own birthdays. And while I will admit that I haven't yet and may never shake myself of the joy of receiving a thoughtful gift, I have to say that I've always loved giving gifts even more. (Sometimes I give myself gifts too. Somehow, I always know exactly what I want!)
So, to start the celebration off, I've been posting specials to the etsy shop each day. They're changing, and they're pretty good, if I do say so myself. I'll have even more stuff on the website + here once we get back from Renegade in Chicago this coming weekend.
In the meantime, it's been WAY too long since I last drew a name + gave some things away. I'm going to do exactly that, and be giving some serious quantities of stuff away at the end of the month. And I'm going to give you lots of chances. Add your name to this multiple times!
Here's how to enter: 1. Leave a comment on this post naming... hmm, let's see... your favorite kind of birthday cake! 2. Send a photo or photos of anything you've made with traveling rhinos fiber or yarn for the gallery. each individual item made will count for a separate entry. it's even ok if you've sent the item in to me previously! you still get an entry per item. send flickr links/photos to gallery[at]travelingrhinos[dot]com. 3. Sign up for the newsletter, here! If you're already on the list, send me a note at info[at]travelingrhinos[dot]com with the subject "newsletter entry" instead!
hmm. well, I guess I'll go with pictures since I feel a little overwhelmed at the idea of trying to explain all that's happened since my last real post about anything... basically the summer was about spending time with Dane + Daisy, traveling, and food. Oh, and there was fiber in there too.

Just a quick reminder that the First Renegade Craft Fair in San
Francisco is this weekend! If you're in the area, please stop by!
It's at the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday, July
12th & 13th from 11-7.
We'll be in booth #33, along with a ton of amazing crafters, plus food
and music! More info + directions at http://www.renegadecraft.com.
Um, yeah. Remember back in June when I was talking about trying to get back here to tell you stuff about early June (Atlanta, ICE, etc.) when I got back from New York? Fail. How about some chatter and pictures about Renegade in Brooklyn? Fail. All the food we've been making at home, fun summer activities? Fail.
Sigh. Well, now I'm all the way on the left coast getting set for Renegade in San Francisco tomorrow, visiting with old friends, and eating a ton of amazing food. And after this weekend, I won't have much of an excuse to not check in here, unless I'm in a total food coma for days straight. So I'm going to try again!
In the meantime, here's a little photo of how I'm feeling about my blogging progress:
Come to think of it, this is also the only downside of our rather extended trip/vacation out west: not being able to bring the pup out with us. Feeling pretty guilty about it. Actually, enough so that we're talking about taking a road trip next summer instead of flying, so she can come too.
Wow, I'm going to have to come in and cheatbackdate slightly modify my unfinished blog entries to catch y'all up on what I've been doing since April. Hint: mostly it's involved moving, and stocking up for summer shows.
Big one this weekend! Renegade in Brooklyn. I'm excited, Renegade is always awesome, people are always super fun, and there is always loads of amazing shopping! If you're within say, a two hour radius of New York, I would head in!
We'll be in booth #181, next to the awesome peeps from The Sampler! Please stop by and say hello if you end up at the fair. I'll be the confused- and tired-looking one. mr. rhino will be the one frantically grading papers while trying really hard to be helpful and sometimes succeeding if you ask him yarn questions.
I will be attempting to return to normally scheduled programming, aka some sort of blogging routine, on Monday when we return. Check back to see if I manage to keep my word or not? Have a good weekend!
In my defense, it has been a little insane around here. Traveling, taxes, more traveling, long-term houseguests, and MOVING! That last one isn't done yet, either. I promise to do penance asap. In the meantime, I thought I ought to at least make a few notes here for those who might wander here in search of information.
MARCH's fiber club was mailed in EARLY March, before I left to go overseas. If you haven't received it yet, someone in the postal service has probably hijacked it, and you should contact me RIGHT AWAY.
APRIL's fiber club shipments just went out this past week. So if you haven't received yours yet, please give it a few more days, longer if you are outside the US. Apologies for the delay.
No updates on the book yet. Supposedly will hear by the end of the month, so that's not too far away! Fingers crossed. Will be sending a note to those on my lists for contributing later this week, so please keep an eye out for that.
FIRST SHOW OF THE SEASON IS THIS WEEKEND!! Details follow.
Anyway, if you're in the area and like sheep or food or crafts or historical fun, please consider stopping by to say hello. I'll be the exhausted, confused girl who looks like hell but will be very happy to see you!
Have now been back from our friends' lovely Caribbean (I still never spell that right the first time, though) destination wedding for over a week, and am off again next Thursday. Last minute-decision family traveling. Sigh. More on travels later.
I am cleaning house (and studio) in a serious way. I have added many items to the sale category in my etsy shop, some new, others holiday store/show items that I'm just inventorying now. In addition, almost everything at travelingrhinos.com is on sale as well. 20% offyarn & fiber, felted beads, headbands and more, and a whopping 40% off all remaining bracelets. I will continue to add sale items through Sunday. If you want to shop & combine orders, please use a credit card for payment on the site, and I will adjust the total and charge you only once for everything.
Everything purchased + paid for by midnight EST Tuesday (March 4th) will ship by Wednesday, March 5th. I will leave the sale up until I return on March 20th, but nothing will ship while I am away.
Also, tomorrow morning, the studio sale will begin! That link brings you to the correct page, but there won't be anything to buy until tomorrow around 10am EST. You can use any coupons you might have floating around on sale & studio sale items as well!
However, please note that coupons/codes may NOT be applied to fiber club subscriptions. To avoid additional confusion, light/double scoop 3 month subscriptions are only available for immediate purchase in the etsy shop at this time. Longer-term subscriptions will be posted as reserved items upon specific request.
Also, I WILL be opening up a limited number of spaces for DELUXE subscriptions on Tuesday, March 5th, at 3 pm EST. Anyone who has requested to be on the wait list will be given priority until Monday. Emails are on their way to waiting list people! You can contact me directly at info[at]travelingrhinos[dot]com to be added to this list.
Due to an inability on my part to do basic math, I will also have three deluxe portions of January's fiber for sale at 9pm tonight. (Again, EST, in the etsy shop.)
Spankin' new awesome jewelry, kits & more will arrive late in March. That's all the business I have for now. Tune in later tonight for some more personal blather.
PS. Psst. Use code CLEANOUT for free shipping on orders of $60 or more.
WOW. I am so truly floored by the responses to my initial cry for helpcall for submissions. Fiber people rock! Of course, in the midst of trying to reply to everyone my internet connection decided to crap out on me. I've caught up on the bulk of the emails-- anything sent to me before Saturday night I've replied to. Everything after that, I'm working on it! If you sent me an email or left a comment BEFORE Saturday night (EST) and I haven't replied yet, please resend! You may have gotten lost in the shuffle. If you contacted me after that, please be patient! I'm working as fast as I can!
For those who are not so interested in fiber/yarn, here's something I discovered (on TV, not the internet, gasp!) during my internet connection's temper tantrum. The video is cute and I really like Matt Costa's voice. I think it sounds like a quirky little mix of Dylan & Adam Levine. And, (BONUS!) the MP3 is available for free download at amazon.com. (Well it was earlier this afternoon when, internet-connection-mostly-seemingly-repaired I went searching for it there...) Enjoy! (Fiber folks, there's more info for you below.)
Ok, a bit more on the whole submissions/gallery thing, since I seem to have spent a lot of my time repeating myself to folks who were interested (I just didn't think there'd be so many!)...
I was/am looking for a few different things: 1) gallery items that were ready to send right away (and I am all set on those now, thank you!) 2) people who are interested in submitting something later on in the spring/summer and 3) people who are interested in test-knitting/crocheting projects/patterns in the spring/summer or later
Gallery items that I am particularly interested in are: finished objects created with hand-dyed/hand-painted yarn or fiber. This could include knitted or crocheted garments, accessories, toys & decorative items, felted or fulled FOs, or, if you feel that the hand-dyeing/hand-painting is particularly spectacular/beautiful/clever, the yarn/fiber itself. If you want to submit yarn or fiber as a gallery item, please consider at least swatching some of your yarn or spinning or felting a small sample of the fiber; this will make your item a stronger candidate for the gallery.
If you are interested in either #2 or #3, please shoot me an email at info[AT]travelingrhinos[DOT]com and I will add you to the lists to be updated when I am ready to proceed with those steps. If you're interested in testing patterns/projects, please let me know if you knit or crochet (or both). Please don't be shy! I am thrilled by the response so far! I'd love for the gallery (which is planned to be pretty extensive) to be filled with the widest variety of work from as varied a group of artists & crafters as possible! Of course, questions can be directed to the same email address.
Also, I'd appreciate if you'd send my internet connection nice thoughts. It's one thing to isolate yourself from the internet, but when you want it and can't have it... oh, the torture!
Finally, though I don't like to get to political (often politics = confrontation, and I am an avid avoider of confrontation), if you don't vote, you can't complain later, right?
